R36S vs R36H: the shape is the whole decision
These two are the closest pair in the R36 family. Same Rockchip RK3326, same 3.5-inch 640×480 4:3 panel, same emulation ceiling. What differs is the shape of the thing in your hands — and a battery detail almost nobody mentions.

What is identical
Both run a Rockchip RK3326 on an open-source Linux system, both use a 3.5-inch 640×480 IPS panel in 4:3, and both handle the same range of systems — comfortable from NES through 16-bit, working hard at PlayStation 1.
If you were hoping one of them emulates meaningfully more than the other, they do not. Anyone claiming otherwise is describing the bundled card, not the hardware.
The vertical case: R36S
Vertical handhelds are more pocketable. The R36S is narrower than the R36H and slips into a jacket pocket in a way the horizontal model does not quite manage.
It is also the model with the community behind it. If you intend to change firmware, theme the interface, or troubleshoot an awkward game, the R36S has the most written about it by a wide margin.
The horizontal case: R36H
A horizontal body puts your hands where a normal controller puts them. For a lot of adults that is the difference between a device they use and one that lives in a drawer after two weeks.
The strain on a vertical handheld lands in the thumbs, because they have to reach up and inwards. Horizontal spreads the load across both hands. Nobody notices this in a ten-minute try; everybody notices it in an hour.
The battery difference nobody mentions
On paper the R36S wins: 3200 mAh against 3000 mAh. In practice the R36H wins, because its battery is user-replaceable and the R36S's is not.
Lithium cells in budget hardware lose meaningful capacity within two years. On the R36H that is a five-minute fix. On the R36S it is the end of the console's useful life.
Which one for a gift?
The R36H, if you do not know the recipient's hands. The horizontal shape is the safer bet for an adult, and it is the more familiar object — it reads as "a games console" to someone who has not followed this category.
The R36S is the better gift for someone who already tinkers, because it is the one with the modding scene.
Which one for a commute?
The R36S. Pocketability is the deciding factor when the device has to disappear into a coat between trains, and the vertical body is genuinely easier to stow.
How to decide in thirty seconds
- Have you played a vertical handheld as an adult and been fine? Take the R36S.
- Do your hands cramp on phones during long sessions? Take the R36H.
- Do you want to mod the firmware? R36S — the guides exist for it.
- Do you want the console to still work in three years? R36H — you can replace the battery.
If neither shape convinces you
The R36 Max is the other direction entirely: vertical like the R36S, but with a 4.0-inch 720×720 screen and a 4000 mAh battery. If your hesitation is about the small screen rather than the shape, that is the model to look at instead.
